What You'll Learn: The Four Components of DBT

DBT is an evidence-based therapy that combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness practices. In this group, you'll develop skills in four key areas:

1. Emotion Regulation Learn to understand and manage intense emotions. You'll discover practical techniques—like using cold water or ice to calm your nervous system—that help you respond to emotional challenges rather than react to them.

2. Distress Tolerance Build your capacity to cope with difficult situations without making them worse. These skills help you get through crisis moments and accept reality as it is, even when it's painful.

3. Interpersonal Effectiveness Improve your relationships and communication. Many people struggle with setting boundaries, asking for what they need, or maintaining self-respect in relationships. DBT teaches specific strategies for navigating these challenges.

4. Mindfulness Develop present-moment awareness through mindfulness practices, including mindful eating and meditation. Mindfulness is the foundation of DBT, helping you observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment.

Who Benefits from DBT?

DBT was originally developed for individuals with borderline personality disorder, but research shows it's effective for anyone struggling with:

  • Emotional dysregulation or intense mood swings
  • Difficulty managing anger, anxiety, or sadness
  • Relationship conflicts or communication challenges
  • Impulsive behaviours
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness
  • Self-destructive patterns

Whether you're dealing with a specific diagnosis or simply want practical tools for emotional wellness, DBT skills can help.
